English translation

And among them: the vessel of trust and contentment and the traveler of the path of annihilation, Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Isa al-Kharraz, may Allah be pleased with him. He was the tongue of the states of the disciples and the proof of the moments of the seekers, and he was the first person to speak of the station of annihilation (fana) and subsistence (baqa). His virtues are renowned, his spiritual disciplines and reported subtleties, his radiant writings, his sublime speech and lofty symbols. He kept the company of Dhu al-Nun al-Misri, Bishr al-Hafi, and Sari al-Saqati. It is related from him that concerning the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: 'Hearts are naturally disposed to love those who are good to them,' he said: 'How astonishing is one who sees a benefactor other than God—how can he not incline with his whole being toward God!' The nature of hearts is set upon loving the one who does good to them; that is, whoever does good to someone, inevitably that person loves him in his heart. Abu Sa'id said: How astonishing! The one who in all the world knows no true benefactor except God the Exalted—how does he not surrender his heart entirely to Him? For true beneficence is that which the Owner of all beings performs; for beneficence is doing good to one who is in need of that good. He who himself requires beneficence from another—how can he perform beneficence? So sovereignty and dominion belong to God, majestic is His majesty, who is free of need from all others, while all the worlds and both realms are in need of Him. And when the friends of the Truth understood this meaning, in every favor and benefaction they beheld the Benefactor and Bestower. Their hearts became entirely captive to His love, and they turned away from all other than Him. And God knows best.
