Section 7 - Allusion to the Division of Love into Essential, Attributive, Active, and Vestigial

Original content

English translation

Either love originates from the Divine Essence, Or it arises from the beauty of His Attributes, Or from His Actions, or His Effects; Consider love restricted to these four types. The love of the Essence is when the heart Is inclined toward the Truth, free of all self-interest. The lover finds within himself a yearning, For which there is no defined external cause. An attraction arises from the depths of the soul, An attraction that cannot be described in words. Indeed, any description of it falls short, And any pointer toward it is misleading. If you ask: 'Who is your beloved? In all this striving, what is your goal? Who took sleep from your tearful eyes? Who took patience from your restless soul? Your conscious soul was set upon the path; How did you fall from the way, and who led you astray?' In response to these questions, he remains mute, Unable to utter a breath regarding the reality of his state. Whatever might manifest in his mind Is far too inadequate to express his true condition.
