Section 30 - Allusion to the Masters of Contemplation, Which Is the Manifestation of the Essence

Original content

English translation

And that other saw the whole as a single mirror, In which he clearly witnessed God. He saw a single Essence within the limits of all directions, Manifested with all attributes. The universe is one existence from end to end, All its parts connected to one another. It is a solid sphere without any hollow cavity, In which both the subtle and the dense are gathered. Neither is there any gap or distance in it, Nor does any container complain of a vacuum. Their distinctions from one another Arise from accidents, along with attributes and forms. That precious, receptive substance Which is the bearer of those accidents, Is the mirror of the Peerless Essence, And those accidents are the manifestations of the Names. Whoever is looking at the state of the mirror, Beholding its form is among the impossibilities. And whoever's eye is upon the form, Sees the mirror dissolved in the form. The eye of the gnostic, which is sharp-sighted, Is like this in the witnessing of the world. He sees in the whole world a single Essence, Shining forth with its aspects and attributes. Like a mirror, the attribute and essence of the world Are hidden from before his eyes. He sees nothing of the world except God, And sees nothing anywhere except the Truth. The beauty of God became his direct vision, And his mirror became absorbed in the Witnessed. Do you know at all what kind of manifestation this is? What is the mirror, and who is in the mirror? The mirror is He, and inside the mirror is He as well, Both absent from sight and directly witnessed. First He comes forth like a mirror, And then He displays His face in the mirror. If you view Him in limitation, Do not accept His name and form as anything but the mirror. But if you find Him free from limitation, absolute, He is the One revealed in the mirror of the Truth.
