Section 35 - As for the Hululiyya (Incarnationists), May Allah Curse Them

Original content

English translation

His words, exalted: 'What is there after the truth except error?' (Yunus 10:32)

Of those two rejected groups who give allegiance to this sect and take them as companions in their own error: one group gives allegiance to Abu Hulman al-Dimashqi and transmits reports from him — contrary to what is recorded of him in the books of the masters, for the people of this path count that elder among the possessors of the heart; but those heretics ascribe to him incarnation (hulul), commingling (imtizaj), and the transmigration of souls (naskh al-arwah). I have seen in a book by an earlier author that he impugned him, and he also fastened a [distorted] image of him upon the scholars of the principles (usul); and God, mighty and majestic, knows him better.

And another group attributes the doctrine to Faris, and he claims that this creed is that of Husayn ibn Mansur [al-Hallaj], and that none holds this creed except the companions of Husayn. And I saw Abu Ja'far al-Saydalani with four thousand men scattered throughout Iraq who were Hallajis — all of them were cursing Faris for this doctrine; and in his books, which are Husayn's own compositions, there is nothing but verification (tahqiq).

And I, who am Ali ibn Uthman al-Jullabi, say: I do not know who Faris and Abu Hulman were or what they said, but whoever professes a doctrine contrary to divine unity (tawhid) and verification has no share whatsoever in religion; and since religion, which is the root, is not firmly established [in such a one], Sufism, which is its fruit and branch, is all the more liable to be defective — for the manifestation of miracles (karamat) and the unveiling of signs takes place only for the people of religion and divine unity.

And all the errors of those who profess this have fallen concerning the spirit (ruh); and I shall now expound all the rulings pertaining to it, and bring forth the doctrines, fallacies, and specious arguments of the heretics regarding it, so that you — may God strengthen you — may have strength through this; for in this matter there is much corruption.
