Section 10 - As for the Nuriyya

Original content

English translation

The allegiance of the Nuris is to Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Nuri, may God be pleased with him. He was one of the foremost scholars among the Sufis, and more renowned than light itself among them, with radiant virtues and decisive proofs. In Sufism he holds a praiseworthy doctrine and a chosen principle. The canon of his doctrine is the preferring of Sufism (tasawwuf) over poverty (faqr), and his practice accords with that of Junayd.

Among the rarities of his path is that in companionship (suhba) he commands preferring the right of one's companion over one's own right, and he holds companionship without such self-sacrifice (ithar) to be forbidden, saying: 'Companionship is an obligation for dervishes, seclusion is blameworthy, and the preferring of one's companion over oneself is likewise an obligation.'

And it is related from him that he said: 'Beware of seclusion, for seclusion is the companionship of Satan; and cling to companionship, for in companionship is the good pleasure of the All-Merciful. Beware of seclusion, for it is the companionship of Satan, and cling to companionship, for in companionship lies the good pleasure of God, mighty and majestic.'

And now I shall set forth the reality of self-sacrifice (ithar). When I reach the chapter on companionship and seclusion, there I shall explain its subtle points, so that the benefits may become more general.
