Original content

English translation

Previously, in the account of Abu al-Hasan al-Nuri (may God's mercy be upon him), I had said that they are twelve groups. Two of them are rejected and ten accepted, and each of these categories has a good practice and a praiseworthy path in spiritual struggles (mujahadat) and a subtle discipline in contemplations (mushahadat). And although they differ in their struggles, contemplations, and ascetic exercises, they are in agreement and concord in the principles and the branches of the Sacred Law (shari'a). And Abu Yazid (may God be pleased with him) said: 'The disagreement of the scholars is a mercy, except in the isolation of the affirmation of divine unity (tawhid).' And in agreement with this there is a well-known tradition.

And the reality of Sufism lies among the sayings of the masters from the standpoint of reality, and it is apportioned from the standpoint of metaphor and outward forms. So I, by way of brevity and conciseness, will turn my discourse to the exposition of that which is apportioned, and in the fundamental doctrine I will spread out a carpet for each one, so that the seeker may attain knowledge of it, and it may be a weapon for the scholars, and righteousness for the disciples, and salvation for the lovers, and success for the intelligent, and an admonition for the men of chivalry (muruwwa), and for me a reward in both worlds. And with God is help and success, and God suffices us and He is the excellent Companion.
