Section 7 - As for the Tayfuriyya

Original content

English translation

This group takes as their guide Abu Yazid, Tayfur ibn Isa al-Bastami (may God be pleased with him). He was among the chiefs of the Sufis and among their great ones, and his path was one of overpowering rapture (ghalaba) and intoxication (sukr). The overpowering of the Truth (Almighty and Glorious) and the intoxication of love are not of the kind that a man can acquire; and whatever lies outside the sphere of acquisition, to summon people to it is vain, and to imitate it is impossible. Inevitably, the sober man does not possess the attribute of intoxication, and a man has no authority to draw intoxication upon himself. The intoxicated one is himself overpowered; he has no attention to give to created beings, such that any affected quality could appear in him.

The masters of this path hold that: following as a guide is not sound except in one who is upright and has escaped from the turning of the states.

But another group deems it permissible for someone to tread the road of intoxication and rapture by deliberate effort (takalluf), on the grounds that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Weep, and if you cannot weep, then make yourselves weep' — that is, weep, or make yourselves resemble those who weep. And this has two aspects:

One is a person making himself resemble a group for the sake of hypocritical display (riya), and this is manifest polytheism; the other is a person making himself resemble them so that God Most High may perhaps raise him to the rank of those whom he has made himself resemble — so that it accords with what the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever imitates a people is one of them.' So whatever comes under the kinds of spiritual striving (mujahadat) he brings onto the path, and he remains at the threshold of hope until God Most High opens to him the reality and inner meanings of it — for one of the masters said: 'Contemplations are the inheritances of spiritual strivings.'

We say: spiritual striving is good in all its senses; but intoxication and rapture do not come under acquisition, such that they could be drawn by spiritual striving, and the very act of striving does not become the cause of attaining intoxication. Spiritual striving can be done in the state of sobriety, and the possessor of sobriety has no orientation toward accepting intoxication — and this would be an impossibility.

So we shall explain the reality of intoxication and sobriety according to the differences among the masters, so that the difficulty may be removed, if God Most High wills.
