English translation

O You, by whose remembrance the souls of lovers are refreshed, And by the water of whose grace the tongues of lovers are made moist. From You, a shadow has fallen upon the world, Which has become the capital of beauty for the fair-faced ones. Lovers have fallen for that shadow, And remain in passionate longing because of that capital. Until the secret of Your beauty arose from Layli, Her love did not set fire to Majnun. Until You made Shirin's lips like sugar, The livers of those two lovers did not fill with blood. Until Azra became silver-cheeked through You, The eyes of Wamiq did not shed tears like quicksilver. The discourse of beauty and love is from You alone, And there is no lover or beloved other than You. O You, before whom the beauty of the fair is but a veil, While You have hidden Your face behind that veil. You have nurtured the veil with Your own beauty, And thus, like a veiled beauty, it steals hearts. Your beautiful face has so aligned with the veil, That the veil cannot be distinguished from Your face. How long will You remain coquettish behind the veil, While a whole world makes love with the patterns on the veil? It is time that You draw back this veil from before us, And reveal Your face free from any veil. In the contemplation of Yourself, make me beside myself, And render me free from distinguishing between good and evil. May I be a lover inflamed by You, With my eyes sewn shut to all others. O You, whose journey is in the modes of realities, There is none but You in the affairs of creation. Though I may look from any perspective, I see none other than You in the universe. You are the one manifest in the form of the world, And You are the subtle knower in the garment of man. Duality has no admittance into Your sanctuary, There is no talk of the few or the many. I desire that You free me from duality and make me one, And establish me in the stations of unity. So that like that Kurd who escaped from duality, I might say: 'Is this I, O God, or is it You?' 'If it is I, whence come this knowledge and power? And if it is You, whence arose this weakness and frailty?'
