Section 37 - Chapter

Original content

English translation

One of the sheikhs, may God have mercy on him, says: «The spirit in the body is like fire in firewood; the fire is created (makhluq) and the charcoal is manufactured (masnu').» The soul within the body is like fire within charcoal—the fire created and the charcoal manufactured—and pre-eternity (qidam) is permissible for nothing except the Essence and Attributes of God. And among the sheikhs, may God be pleased with them, it was Abu Bakr al-Wasiti who spoke the most about the spirit. It is related from him that he said: «The spirits are of ten stations.» The souls stand upon ten stations: first, the souls of the sincere (mukhlisan), who are imprisoned in a darkness and do not know what will be done with them; second, the souls of the pious men, who are joyful in the heavens of this world through the inheritance of their deeds and who ascend by the obediences they have performed and by their strength; third, the souls of the disciples (muridan), who are in the fourth heaven amid the delights of sincerity and the shade of their own deeds together with the angels; fourth, the souls of the people of favors (ahl-i minan), who are suspended in lamps of light from the Throne, whose nourishment is mercy and whose drink is grace and nearness; fifth, the souls of the people of fidelity (ahl-i vafa), who make merry within the veil of purity and the station of the chosen rank; sixth, the souls of the martyrs, who are within the crops of birds, in Paradise amid its gardens, going wherever they wish, in season and out of season; seventh, the souls of the yearning ones (mushtaqan), who stand upon the carpet of courtesy within the veils of the lights of the Attributes; eighth, the souls of the gnostics (arifan), who in the enclosures of holiness, morning and evening, hear the speech of the Lord and behold their own dwellings in Paradise and in this world; ninth, the souls of the friends (dustan), who are immersed in the contemplation of Beauty and the station of unveiling, and who know none but Him and take rest in nothing; tenth, the souls of the dervishes, who are fixed in the place of annihilation (fana), whose attributes have been transformed and whose states have been changed. And it is related from the sheikhs, may God be pleased with them, that they have seen this, each one in a certain form, and this is permissible; for, as we have said, it exists and is a subtle body, so it must be visible, and when God Most High wills, He shows it to His servant as He wills. And the author of the book says: In sum, our life is through God and our permanence is by Him, and our being kept alive is the act of the Truth, and we are alive by His creating, not by His Essence and Attributes. And the doctrine of the 'spiritualists' (ruhaniyan) is entirely false; and among the great errors current among the people is this: that they call the spirit eternal (qadim)—and however much they alter the expression, some saying 'self' (nafs) and 'prime matter' (hayula), and some saying 'light and darkness.' The falsifiers of this Path speak of annihilation and subsistence (fana and baqa), or gathering and dispersion (jam' and tafriqa), or the like. They have fashioned a specious expression and adorn their unbelief with it, and the Sufis are free of that group; for the affirmation of sainthood (wilayat) and the reality of the love of God are not established except through gnosis of Him, and when someone does not distinguish the eternal from the originated, whatever he says in his speech is that of an ignorant man, and the wise do not incline to the speech of the ignorant. Now, what was intended concerning these two false groups in this chapter has been set forth; and if more than this is required, it must be sought in books of mine devoted to it. My aim here is not prolixity. Now I shall, in this book, expound the unveiling of the veil of the chapters of practices (mu'amalat) and the realities of the people of Sufism with manifest proofs, so that the way of knowing the goal may become easy for you, and that whoever among the deniers possesses insight may come to the way, and that for me there may be, through this, a supplication and a reward, God Most High willing.
