Section 27 - In Condemnation of Women, Who are the Object of Lust on Whom the Having of Children Depends

Original content

English translation

There is no remedy for the lustful except a woman, But the companionship of a woman is the root-destroyer of life. What is a woman? A deficient one in intellect and religion; There is no such incomplete being in the world. Deem it far from the conduct of the people of perfection To be the plaything of the deficient, month and year. Before the perfect one who is a master in knowledge, To be the plaything of the deficient is lesser than the deficient. At the table of the bounty of the Giver of Favors, There is no denier of blessings worse than a woman. Even if you give a woman silver and gold for a hundred years, And cover her from head to foot in jewels, Sew her garments from the brocade of Shushtar, Illuminate her house with golden basins, Hang rubies and pearls from her ears, Make her nightgown of gold-woven fine silk, Both at lunch and at dinner time, Adorn her table with various dishes, When she becomes thirsty, from a jeweled chalice, Bring her water from the spring of Khidr, When she desires fruit like kings, Bring her pomegranates of Yazd and apples of Isfahan, Yet when she gets into a dispute and twists in anger, All of these are nothing, nothing in her eyes. She will say to you, 'O soul-melter, O life-reducer, I have never seen anything [good] from you at any time.' Even though her face is a tablet of purity, That tablet is empty of the word of loyalty. In the world, who has seen loyalty from a woman? Who has seen anything but cunning and treachery? For years she may embrace you in her arms, But as soon as you turn your face away, she will forget you. If you are old, she requires another lover, She needs a companion stronger than you. When a youth comes into her sight, She will want him to gird his loins in your place.
