پی به مقصود کی برد سالک
نا شده نفس خویش را هالک

دل چو در نفس و وایه او بست
گشت ازان وایه پایه او پست

می خورد می چرد بهایم وار
می برد می درد سبع کردار

بر رخش باب قرب مسدود است
وز حریم حضور مطرود است

می نهد پا برون ز حد حقوق
عاشق است او حظوظ چون معشوق

بر حقوق اقتصار ننماید
ره به کسب حظوظ پیماید

هر چه باشد بدان حیات منوط
یا قوام بدن بدان مربوط

از ضرورات نفس دارندش
وز حقوق بدن شمارندش

هست بی آن بقای نفس محال
ترک آن را بکل مبند خیال

وانچه زاید بود بر این مقدار
ز آرزوهای نفس بد کردار

نفس را باشد از قبیل حظوظ
هر که مرد است ازان بود محفوظ

چون حقوقی بود طعام و شراب
نور زاید ازان و صدق و صواب

فعل خیرات و ترک محظورات
واندر این فعل ترک صبر و ثبات

ور حظوظی بود معاذالله
آید از وی نتیجه های تباه

ظلمت و غفلت و فساد و فجور
ریبت و غیبت و عناد و غرور

بر حقوق اقتصار کردن به
ترک حظ اختیار کردن به

سالها هر چه خواستی کردی
عمرها هر چه خواستی خوردی

چیست آخر ازان ذخیره تو
جز دل تار و نفس تیره تو

دو سه روزی لبی به دندان گیر
راه مردان و ارجمندان گیر

بهر نای گلو و طبل شکم
چند باشی به جنگ غصه دژم

نای خالی به است و طبل تهی
چند در نای و طبل لقمه نهی

تا تو این نای را نسازی تنگ
نشوی در جهان بلند آهنگ

تا بر این طبل تازه باشد پوست
نرسد صیت تو به دشمن و دوست

پیش ازان کت اجل بگیرد نای
بزنی طبل ازین سپنج سرای

شو علم در فنا و فقر و قدم
نه به ملک قدم به طبل و علم

English translation

How can the seeker reach the goal without destroying his own carnal self (nafs)?

When the heart binds itself to the self and its desires, its status becomes degraded due to that desire.

He eats and grazes like cattle, he snatches and tears like wild beasts.

The gate of proximity is closed to his face, and he is banished from the sanctuary of presence.

He steps beyond the boundary of rights, for he is in love with pleasures as if with a beloved.

He does not limit himself to rights, he travels the path of acquiring pleasures.

Whatever life depends upon, or the body's sustenance is linked to,

They consider it among the necessities of the self, and count it among the rights of the body.

Without it, the survival of the self is impossible; do not even think of abandoning it entirely.

And whatever exceeds this measure, from the desires of the evil-doing self,

Belongs to the category of pleasures of the self; whoever is a true man remains protected from it.

When food and drink are taken as rights (necessities), light is born from them, along with truthfulness and righteousness,

Doing good deeds and abandoning forbidden things, and keeping patience and steadfastness in this act.

But if they are taken as pleasures, God forbid, ruinous consequences will result from them:

Darkness, negligence, corruption, and vice, doubt, backbiting, obstinacy, and pride.

It is better to limit oneself to rights, it is better to choose to abandon pleasures.

For years you did whatever you wanted, for lifetimes you ate whatever you wanted.

What is your store in the end from that, except a dark heart and a clouded self?

For two or three days, bite your lip, take the path of noble and honorable men.

For the pipe of the throat and the drum of the stomach, how long will you be sorrowful and depressed in the war of grief?

An empty pipe is better, and an empty drum; how long will you put morsels in the pipe and the drum?

Until you make this pipe narrow, you will not become high-toned in the world.

As long as the skin on this drum is fresh, your fame will not reach enemy or friend.

Before death seizes your throat, strike your drum to depart from this temporary abode.

Become a banner in annihilation, poverty, and eternity; step into the eternal realm, not with the drum and banner.
