شیخ مهنه که بود پیوسته
از من و مای خویشتن رسته

صد حکایت ز خویش واگفتی
لیک هرگز نه من نه ما گفتی

رفتی اندر صف صفا کیشان
بر زبانش به جای من ایشان

بود بر وی شهود حق غالب
دید خود را ز چشم خود غایب

لفظ ایشان که خاص غایب راست
جامه ای بود بر قد او راست

خرد آن ساده را کند تعییر
که ز غایب به من کند تعبیر

خاصه از غایبی که ماند دور
جاودان از حریم قرب و حضور

بکشد رخت خود ز شهر وجود
بنشیند به گوشه ای نابود

گر بجوید به سال های دراز
اثر خویشتن نیابد باز

English translation

The Sheikh of Mehna, who was constantly Liberated from his own 'I' and 'we', Would relate a hundred anecdotes about himself, Yet he would never say 'I' or 'we'. He would walk among the ranks of the pure-hearted, And on his tongue, instead of 'I', was 'they' (Ishan). The witnessing of the Divine Truth was dominant over him, And he saw himself as absent from his own eyes. The word 'they' (Ishan), which is specific to the absent (third person), Was a garment perfectly suited to his stature. Intellect reproaches that simpleton Who translates the absent as 'I'; Especially an absent one who remains far Eternally from the sanctuary of proximity and presence. He draws his belongings from the city of existence, And settles in a corner of non-existence. Even if he searches for many long years, He will not find any trace of himself again.
