English translation
Once again, when His Majesty the King led his army from Khorasan toward Iraq, He [the prognosticator] said, 'Henceforth the auspicious King Will not return to Khorasan alive.' Yet the King returned to his throne once more, And the prince died before his father. After that, for many long years, the King Lived on the throne of majesty and luxury. Both of his pronouncements proved contrary to reality; The master's hardship and toil went to waste. This and many similar prognostications Were reversed by the turning of days. Yet they are never ashamed; They are not embarrassed by this quality. It became manifest from the audacity of these people That 'Modesty is a branch of faith' [and they lack both]. If Jafr exists, it is prophetic wisdom, Lit from the lamp of Mustafa [Muhammad]. Never, except by the light of obedience, Can the veil be lifted from its beauty. But the self-styled Jafr-knower of today is drunk and impure, Placing books of this sort before him. Neither fearing the outcome of the hereafter, Nor asking about the means of well-being. Having written a few letters side by side, And placed numbers underneath them, Binding themselves to a vain imagination, Entirely born of the trickery of an idle intellect. To him, it is the precision of the people of heart, but to them it is only vexation; What is this 'Jafr of Ja'far al-Sadiq'? Ja'far al-Sadiq is disgusted by you; The truthful are ashamed of the liars. Truth is an adornment, and falsehood is a blemish, and what a blemish! Both are opposites that can never coexist. Stranger still is that the people of status and grandeur, Who have no equal in their time, Though famed for their intellect throughout the world, Buy these delusions from these donkeys! Those jewels which the virtuous pierced, And those mystical truths which the gnostics spoke, Are all but wind in the ears of their intellect; Their nature is delighted in avoiding them. They call them all old and dried meat: 'How can there be any new taste in dried meat?' How long will you chew on other people's dried meat? Bring your lips to the fresh, new fruit. But I know not where this 'new' is, Or who possesses the taste of this fresh, new fruit. The claimant who boasts of the 'new' Weaves the warp and weft of his own 'new' fabrications. He abandoned the old before reaching the new; He discarded the old without putting the new in its place. Left stranded on the ground without the new or the old, Driven away from that, and excluded from this. If, during recitation, through the eye of witnessing, The Speaker [God] becomes manifest to you, Do not surrender your heart to the details of words and meanings, Prompted by the straying self and the misleading devil. Rather, fix the eye of witnessing upon the Truth, And kindle the lamp of your soul with His radiance. It is not pleasing when the Beloved is before your eyes, For you to cast your gaze elsewhere. While your Beloved is lying in your embrace, Would you devote your attention to her letter? The letter is a delight to the eye in separation, But on the day of meeting, it is only a headache. When the day of union arrives and your hand is on the Beloved, The place of the letter is upon your turban. And if you become veiled from His beauty, Then contemplating the letter becomes good. But a contemplation which, in the chamber of the soul, Opens a thousand doors of spiritual victories, Reminds you of ancient covenants, And flings open a hundred gates of grace. By lifting the veils, it rescues the Joseph of your soul From this dark pit. It stirs your long-standing yearning, And turns your face away from all besides Him. The secrets of Divine Unity will shine upon you, And the jewels of absolute isolation will pour over you. You will become the keeper of the treasure of secrets, And a guide for the free-spirited. You will find your way to the gate of salvation, And drink wine from the chalice of life. Not that you should fall far from the sweet river, Like a blind bird falling into salty water! Like these futile fools Who, with deceit and sorcery in these days, Boast of expertise in the science of Jafr, Spinning the web of deception around it. They give, out of absolute lack of divine assistance, A hundred predictions of cosmic events, All allegedly deduced from the Book of God, All supposedly extracted from the inner depths of verses! There is no intellectual proof for them, Nor is there any path to them from traditional narration. Altogether the product of a wretched understanding, Based upon numerical rules. A foundation devoid of certainty or even probability, Indeed, feebler than the spider's house. None of them correspond to reality, And not a single light of truth shines from them. The leader of this unfortunate group, Who has abandoned the path of true verification, Having spent years in labor and distress, And written books on this art, Announced from the Glorious Quran That a certain prince, after the King, Would inherit the kingdom and wealth, And his life would be long; Indeed, that under an auspicious star, He would conquer several other countries beyond his father's. And having prepared a chapter on this matter, He brought it before the prince.
