Original content

English translation

When the Incomparable Creator created the universe, He created the First Intellect as the foremost. There are ten in the chain of intellects, O wise one, and that tenth one is active in the world. Since it is entirely the agent of work in the universe, they named it the Active Intellect. It is the bestower of good and evil in the world, it is the guarantor of benefit and harm in the universe. It has no physical connection nor a body, its treasure is independent of this talisman. It is separate from these in its essence and action, it did whatever it willed without their connection. The human spirit is born of its influence, the animal soul is subject to its governance. All of these are under its command, all of these are drowned in its benevolence. It is the commanding king, and others are obedient subjects under its command. Since it is adorned with the attribute of kingship, the guide has sought it from the King. The grace that reaches the world from it, reaches it continuously from above. Before the wise, the wondrous guide, has given the name Sage to the grace from above. Its pure spirit has been named the rational soul, born of this Intellect without physical connection. Its lack of physical connection is what was intended by him who said, 'This was born of a father without a mate.' A very chaste offspring has come forth, and the name of this offspring is Salaman. Who is Absal? This lust-worshiping body, made base under the laws of nature. The body is alive through the soul, and the soul constantly takes pleasure from the body through the perception of sensory things. Both are from that aspect in love with one another, and they do not leave each other's company except by force. What is that sea in which they dwelt, and in whose union they found peace? It is the sea of animal desires, it is the abyss of carnal pleasures. A whole world is drowned in its waves, and in their drowning, they are far from the Truth. What is that 'Absal close in company' while Salaman remains deprived of her? It is the effect of the age of decline, the folding of the carpet of the instruments of lust. The beloved of nature has taken her place by his side, yet the instrument of lust remains idle. What is Salaman's inclination toward the King, and turning his face toward the throne of glory and honor? It is desiring intellectual pleasures, and turning one's face toward the kingdom of intellect. What is that fire? Severe spiritual disciplines, so that nature sets fire to his belongings. Through it, the traces of nature burned away and the soul remained, shaking its skirt free from animal desires. Yet, since for a lifetime it was accustomed to the fire, occasionally the pain of separation showed its face to him. Therefore, the Sage described the beauty of Venus to him, and coupled his soul with the love of Venus. Until gradually he found peace in Venus, and was delivered from the grief of Absal and her love. What is Venus? Those lofty perfections, by attaining which the soul becomes precious. From that beauty, the intellect becomes luminous, and becomes the king of the human realm. I have told you these secrets in brief, and have brought this discourse to a concise end. If you require the detailed version, do some reflection so that the ancient secrets may unfold in detail. This discourse, working on this summary, has ended, and God knows best what is correct.
