Section 11 - On the Cause of Organizing the Book and the Reason for Offering This Address

Original content

English translation

The weakness of old age broke the strength of my talent, And blocked the path of thought to my mind. No understanding of eloquence remained in my heart, And no word of speech remained on my lips. It is better that I draw my head into the collar of silence, And pull my feet into the skirt of forgetfulness. These two verses from the Masnavi of Mawlavi Have a strong relevance to my condition: 'How can composition and rhyme come to me, After the foundations of well-being have been lost? I am thinking of rhyme, and my Beloved Says to me, "Think of nothing but My vision!"' Who is the Beloved? The One who possesses all hearts, All souls are the repository of His secrets. He has awareness of His own house, It is better that you keep His house empty of others. So that when He sees the stranger far from it, He may make that house His place of manifestation. Anyone who has a share of knowledge, Where would they find any meaning other than this acceptable? Yet kings are also His shadow, Richly endowed with His attributes and essence. Praising them is in reality praising Him, And thinking of their attributes is thinking of Him. Inevitably, despite my confession of shortcoming, The praise of the king laid hold of my collar. But for his praise in this ancient palace, A wide field was needed. I make a field for it out of this Masnavi, And I give a new custom to his praise. Otherwise, I had made other Masnavis, And freed my mind from their likes. Especially, the composition of this book is for Him, The manifestation of the signs of His grace and wrath. So that when an occasion is stirred up, I may remain clinging to His remembrance. In His praise, I may utter elegant speech, And in supplication to Him, I may groan and lament. Since I do not hold the skirt of proximity in hand, I must sit in conversation of Him.
