Section 37 - On the Explanation of the Hadith 'Your Greatest Enemy is Your Self (Nafs) Which is Between Your Two Sides'

Original content

English translation

Toward every dome you have a face, On every side you have a flank. The right flank is toward the garden of the Unseen, The left flank is in this abode of doubt. In between your two flanks, continuously, The enemy-natured self (nafs) has taken its seat. From right and left, gifts and deeds, Whatever comes free from defect and flaw, It either ruins it through greed and desire, Or taints it with self-conceit and hypocrisy. Whosoever is other than it, whether jinn or human, Whether of human race or any other kind, Either flees at the invocation of 'La Hawla' (there is no power but in God), Or conforms in deed and word. But this sinister, wicked self, Which is constantly embracing you, Cannot be escaped from by any plan, Nor can it be fled from by any trick. Neither love nor hatred works upon it; This is the secret of 'your greatest enemy'.
