بخش ۱۲۲ - در بیان آنکه قول خیر کدام است که به آن اشتغال نمایند و قول شر کدام است که از آن اجتناب کنند / Section 122 - On the Explanation of What is the Good Speech That They Should Occupy Themselves With and What is the Evil Speech That They Should Avoid

Original content

English translation

Speech issuing from a free agent Is of four kinds, pay attention to me. Either it is good for both listener and speaker, Through which proximity to God is attained; The speaker rises in ranks thereby, And the listener attains salvation and deliverance— Like the speech of the Prophet or the Companions, Who took the right path from it. Or it is beneficial to the conveyor, Even though it is a burden upon the listener— Like the conveying of revelation to the disbelievers Who persisted in their obstinate denial; The Prophet received the reward for conveying, While it only increased the disbelief and insolence of the disbelievers. Or it is good for the listener, But does not turn out well for the conveyor— Like the preaching of the hypocrites of our times, Who did not escape from illusion and doubt; The preacher remains with the sin of vanity and hypocrisy, While the listener put it into practice and received his reward. Or neither the speaker nor the listener Strives for any good through it— Like the discourses of both the elite and the commoners today, Which are entirely of this sort nowadays; Nothing flows upon their tongues Except rubbish and vain babble, Nay, rather, lies, slander, and backbiting, Which they call jest or pleasantry. Of these four, only the first two categories Are fittingly practiced by a wise man. Hold your tongue from those other two kinds, Lest you be disciplined like the ill-mannered.
