English translation

The companions and the master have formed a circle together; They are like the gem and the circle of a signet ring. The knowers of secrets who know the secret of religion Read the Greatest Name from that gem. How blessed is the circle whose ear-ring Is the host of angels from the height of heaven. Like a ring, completely empty of self, Having gone beyond the box of the celestial sphere. Their place is around the circle of the cosmos, Yet their journey is outside that circle. Filled in their hearts, heavenly beings; Separated in their bodies, earthly beings. What is their description? Hidden, yet present; Or kings whose robes are tattered garments. Their souls are birds nested in the Divine Throne; Their bodies are the coin of the treasury of the earth. Absent from themselves and present with the Truth; Turning away from creation and looking toward the Truth. In the garments of worthy kings, Yet keeping themselves hidden in rags. With the Sharia as the emblem of their outward state, And their hearts established upon the Tariqa. Their inner secret is free from all constraints, Always immersed in the Haqiqa. For example, if a thousand dead hearts, Frozen and withered by the desires of the self, Pass through the sanctuary of their assembly, Their hearts will come alive from their dead state. Remembering the time when my time was sweet, And my fortune led my reins toward them. At every moment I would pass by there, And drink water from that spring. I was thirsty-lipped and distressed in state, While before them lay pure, sweet water. I would circle them, and every day I would beg for water drop by drop. Whenever I rushed toward each drop, I would find a fresh life. Alas for that thirsty one who, with dry mouth, Has remained far from the flowing springs. Alas for that fish that, in heat and agitation, Has been kept away from the pleasant seas. Alas for that weary-bodied sheep, Its leg broken by the strike of a stone; Weary and broken-legged in the wilderness, Left alone, separated from the flock and the shepherd. The day is near evening, and on every side Wolves have lined up in ranks for their dinner. Alas for it, a hundred thousand times a thousand, If the shepherd does not come, and at the end of the matter Does not find its distressed heart, And rescue it from their claws; Does not show it the way back to the flock, But instead leaves it abandoned to the wolf. In this wolf-infested wilderness of the world, we Are the sheep, and God's protection is like the shepherd. The day of life has reached the evening of death, And we have not yet folded up the net of hope. The wolf of Satan and the evil-doing self Have laid in ambush for our souls a hundred times; In fact, the people of this age, small and great, Have gathered around us like wolves in ranks. As long as we have not fallen far from the flock, The wolf cannot overpower our soul. But if we remain separated from the flock for a moment, How can we remain safe from its wound? What is the flock? The community of companions, Fellow travelers in the path of love's attraction. If you fall away from this community, At the very first step, you will fall. If it were possible to live far from this community, Then what is the meaning of 'The hand of God is with the community'? Drive your mount toward the community; Know that the manifestation of God's protection is the community. Although protection is fittingly from God, Its manifestation is mostly through the community. It is rare that a solitary traveler Receives the projection of God's protection.
