ای زبان خرد از کنه تو بند
پایه قدر سخن از تو بلند
به خرد شرح کمالت نتوان
به سخن شکر نوالت نتوان
سخن از باغ جمالت وردیست
واندرین مرحله بادآوردیست
از گلی رونق باغی که شناخت؟
وز تفی نور چراغی که شناخت؟
به کزین زمزمه خاموش شویم
پای تا سر چو صدف گوش شویم
طبع جامی که ثناگستر توست
کمترین مرغ وفا پرور توست
هر طرف گرچه هوایی دارد
پای دل بسته به جایی دارد
عار دارد ز حدیث همه کس
بر زبان ذکر تو می خواهد و بس
رخت ازان دایره بیرون آرش
نطق ازین قافیه موزون دارش
به لبش خطبه افزونی ده
بر زرش سکه موزونی نه
English translation
O You, by whose essence the tongue of intellect is bound, And by whom the station of speech's value is elevated.
By intellect, describing Your perfection is impossible; By speech, thanking You for Your bounty is impossible.
Speech of the garden of Your beauty is but a single rose, And in this stage, it is but a wind-borne trifle.
Who has known the splendor of a garden from a single flower? And who has known the light of a lamp from a single spark of heat?
It is better that we fall silent from this murmuring, And become entirely an ear, from head to toe, like a seashell.
The temperament of Jami, who is Your praise-spreader, Is the lowest of Your loyalty-nurturing birds.
Though he has an inclination in every direction, He has the foot of his heart bound to one place.
He feels shame at the speech of all others, And desires on his tongue Your remembrance and nothing else.
Bring his baggage out of that circle [of worldly speech], And keep his speech measured in this rhyme.
Give his lips the sermon of increase, And place upon his gold the coin of measured perfection.
