پیر دهقان چو دانه گندم
در زمین بهر کشت سازد گم

هفته ای را ز زیر خاک کثیف
بر زند سر یکی گیاه ضعیف

چون ازین حال بگذرد یکچند
شود از تربیت قوی و بلند

بعد ازان خوشه آورد بر سر
دانه در وی هنوز تازه و تر

نورسی گر درین همه احوال
کند از پیر سالخورده سؤال

کین چه چیز است، در مقابل آن
غیر گندم نیایدش به زبان

لیک پوشیده نیست مردم را
کانچه خاصیت است گندم را

هست در وی هنوز بالقوه
فهی بالفعل غیر ممحوه

نه ازو نان پزد کسی و نه آش
نشود صرف در وجوه معاش

اسم گندم لبیب ذو تمییز
به تجوز کند بر او تجویز

لیک چون پخته و رسیده شود
به سرا و دکان کشیده شود

نام گندم محاسب ارزاق
به حقیقت بر او کند اطلاق

آدمی را شود طعام و غذی
بلکه او را شود تمام مذی

هستی خود کند در او فانی
سر برآرد ز جیب انسانی

همچنین هر که از زمین و بال
نکشیده ست سر به اوج کمال

چون گیاه فتاده بر خاک است
نام مردم بر او نه ز ادراک است

مگر از تاب علم و آب عمل
همه احوال او شود مبدل

گردد از وی صفات نقصان گم
چون گیاهی که می شود گندم

شود اندر خدای همواره
چون غذا محو در غذا خواره

بر بنی نوع خود شود فایق
آن که این اسم را بود لایق

لیک گر بازجویی آن انسان
که بود فعل و سیرتش این سان

یابیش زیر گنبد دولاب
همچو سیمرغ و کیمیا نایاب

English translation

When the old farmer sows the wheat grain, burying it in the earth, Within a week, a weak sprout emerges from beneath the dark soil. When some time passes in this state, it grows strong and tall through nourishment. Afterward, it bears an ear at its top, though the grain within it is still fresh and moist. If a newcomer, in all these stages, asks the aged elder, 'What is this?', in response, nothing but 'wheat' would come to his tongue. Yet it is not hidden from people that whatever property wheat has Is still within it in potentiality; it is not yet fully in actuality. No one can bake bread or cook soup from it, nor can it be spent on the means of livelihood. A wise person of discernment applies the name 'wheat' to it metaphorically. But when it becomes ripe and mature, and is brought to the house and the shop, The accountant of provisions applies the name 'wheat' to it in reality. It becomes food and nourishment for humans; indeed, it becomes fully absorbed in them. It annihilates its own existence in the human, emerging from the collar of humanity. Likewise, anyone who has not raised their head from the earth of affliction to the height of perfection, Is like a plant fallen upon the dust; calling them 'human' is not due to true understanding. Unless, through the warmth of knowledge and the water of action, all of their states are transformed, And their deficient attributes vanish, like a plant that becomes actual wheat. Such a person becomes eternally dissolved in God, just as food is dissolved in the one who eats it. He surpasses his fellow human beings—he who is truly worthy of this name. But if you search for that human whose deeds and character are thus, You will find him beneath the turning dome of heaven as rare as the Simurgh and the Elixir.
