Section 1 - The Chapter on their Disagreement concerning Audition (Bab Ikhtilafihim fi al-Sama')

Original content

English translation

There is disagreement among the masters and the verifiers concerning audition (sama').

One group said: 'Sama' is an instrument of absence,' and they offered as proof: 'In direct contemplation (mushahada), sama' is impossible; for the lover, in the place of union with the Beloved, in the state of gazing upon Him, has no need of sama'; because sama' belongs to report (khabar), and report, in the place of direct vision, is distance and veil and preoccupation. So it is the instrument of beginners, that by it they may gather from the scatterings of heedlessness; then inevitably the one gathered by it becomes scattered by it.'

And another group said: 'Sama' is an instrument of presence (hudur); because love demands totality, and until the whole of the lover is absorbed in the Beloved he is deficient in love. So just as the heart, in the place of union, has its share of love, and the inner secret (sirr) has contemplation, and the spirit has union, and the body has service, the ear too must have a share, just as the eye has vision.' Very well did the poet say, in a context of jest:

'Ah, pour me wine and tell me it is wine, and do not give me to drink in secret when open declaration is possible.'

Meaning: give me [drink], O friend, so that the eye may see and the hand may touch and the palate may taste and the nose may smell; for the one sense that has no share of it — then say, 'This is wine,' so that the ear too may gain a share, so that all my senses become bound in it and take pleasure from it.

And they say: sama' is an instrument of presence; for the absent one is himself absent, and the absent one is a denier, and the denier is not fit for it.

So sama' is of two kinds: one mediated and the other unmediated. What is heard from the reciter (qari) is the instrument of absence; what is heard from the Maker (Bari) is the instrument of presence, and it was of this that that elder spoke: 'We do not place the creature in that station, that I should hear their speech or utter their discourse.' And God knows best.
