بدان که هریکی را از ایشان در سماع مرتبتی است و ذوق آن بر مقدار مرتبهٔ ایشان باشد؛ چنان که تایب را هرچه شنود ورامدد حسرت و ندامت شود و مشتاق را مایهٔ شوق رؤیت و مؤمن را تأکید یقین، و مرید را تحقیق بیان و محب را باعث انقطاع علایق و فقیر را اساس نومیدی از کل و مثال اصل سماع همچون آفتاب است که بر همه چیزها برافتد و هر چیزی را به مقدار مراتب آن چیز از آن ذوق و مشرب باشد: یکی را می سوزد و یکی را می فروزد و یکی را می نوازد و یکی را می گدازد. و این جمله طوایف که گفتم اندر تحقیق آن بر سه مرتبت اند: یکی مبتدیان، دیگر متوسطان، سدیگر کاملان. و من اندر شرح حال هر یک اندر سماع فصلی بیارم تا به فهم تو قریب تر باشد.

English translation

Know that each one of them has a rank in audition (sama'), and their savor of it is according to the measure of their rank; just as for the penitent, whatever he hears becomes an aid to regret and remorse, and for the yearning one it is the substance of longing for the vision of God, and for the believer a confirmation of certainty, and for the disciple the verification of exposition, and for the lover a cause for the severing of attachments, and for the poor dervish the foundation of despair of all things. The likeness of the root of audition is like the sun that falls upon all things, and every thing, according to the measure of its ranks, has its savor and its drink from it: one it burns, one it kindles, one it caresses, and one it melts.

And all these groups that I have mentioned, in the verification of this matter, are of three ranks: first, the beginners (mubtadiyan); second, the intermediates (mutawassitan); third, the perfected ones (kamilan). And I shall set forth a chapter concerning the state of each of them in audition, so that it may be nearer to your understanding.
