English translation

When Hisham listened to that magnificent ode Which Farazdaq was reciting, From the beginning to the end, His blood boiled with rage in his veins. He immediately vented his anger on Farazdaq, Like a magpie attacking a helpless bird. He humiliated him in the eyes of the Syrians, And ordered him imprisoned for that deed. If he had possessed true eyes, And had been right-acting and of true faith, He would not have stretched out the hand of injustice and tyranny; Instead of that imprisonment, he would have given him a robe of honor. Oh, how many a right-seeing person was transformed By envy, and his perception became cross-eyed! One who was cross-eyed from the very beginning— Beware, what will his state become when envy strikes? The disease of the eye of envy is ophthalmia, And the ophthalmia of the eye of wisdom is envy. By envy, the eye of wisdom is made blind, And by ophthalmia, the eye of envy is deprived of light. The soul of the envious person is consumed by the brand of grief, While the envied one is at peace, free from sorrow. Constantly, due to his corrupt nature, The envious person objects to God: 'Why does He give such wealth or status To so-and-so, and not to me? Even if it does not make me happy, I wish He would strip it away from him too.' The envy of man consumes his good deeds, Even if he has been accustomed to acquiring them for years. Firewood does not suffer such harm from the evil of sparks, As humans suffer from envy. Especially that envy which the people of passion and whim Bear against the chosen ones of God. The place of these is the station of proximity and union; The place of those is the hell of distance and punishment. From the heaven, the moon casts its light; On the earth, the dog barks. From the heaven, the sun shines brightly; On the earth, the bat becomes blind.
