English translation

The story of the praise composed by Bu Firas (Farazdaq) the eloquent, When it reached that righteous, truth-recognizing King (Imam Zayn al-Abidin), He immediately dispatched twelve thousand dirhams For that sweet-spoken orator. Bu Firas did not accept those dirhams, And said: 'My purpose was God and His Messenger; My intention in that praise was neither gift nor bounty. For I have erroneously spent my noble life, In every place and for every worthless person, Wasting it in panegyric and satire. I turned the reins of my poetry toward this praise Solely as an expiation for such words.' [He said in Arabic]: 'I spoke it purely for the sake of Allah, Not that I might receive a substitute for what He has given.' Zayn al-Abidin said: 'O servants of God, What we bestow as a gift, we do not seek back in return. For we are the Household of Generosity; Whatever we have given, we do not take back. We are a cloud of bounty over high and low land; No drop that falls from us ever returns to us. We are the sun upon the heaven of loftiness; Our reflection does not shine back upon us.' When Farazdaq perceived that loyalty and nobility, He saw the truth of the matter and accepted the dirhams. For the sake of God and His Messenger was Whatever came from him, whether rejection or acceptance. His intention in both was truly the Truth. I, too, pine with envy for Farazdaq; If a single sprinkle from that cloud of grace and bounty, Which reached him through that blessed wealth— If a single word of it from that companion should reach me, I would gain a share of eternal fortune. A truthful one among the Sheikhs of the Two Holy Sanctuaries, When he heard that song, free from any blemish, Said: 'To attain the pleasure of God, This single deed is sufficient for Farazdaq. Even if no other deed from his book of good works Should bring him salvation, he has indeed found salvation! He became ready for the pleasure of the Merciful, And became deserving of the gardens of Paradise, Because in the presence of a tyrannical ruler, He made the truth manifest for the sake of Truth.'
