Section 42 - The Effects of Absal's Stratagems on Salaman and His Inclining Toward Her

Original content

English translation

When Salaman, with all his forbearance and dignity, Fell under the influence of Absal's coquetry, A thorn from her eyelashes pricked his heart, And a snake from the snare of her tresses bit him. His patience was broken by her eyebrows, And the honey in his palate turned bitter because of her lips. Her magical narcissus eyes stole his sleep, The rings of her curls took away his strength. His tears ran rose-colored down his cheeks, And his pleasure was constrained by the memory of her mouth. He saw the black mole upon her cheek, And his state was ruined by that black mole. He saw her restless curls upon her cheek, And from the desire for union with her, he became restless. His yearning drew him out from behind the curtain, but Within himself he pondered deeply: 'Lest, if I taste the sweetness of union, Its taste becomes a torment to my soul. It will not remain with me, and for a long life I shall be held back from my status and majesty. A fortune that is not eternal for a man Is not the altar of hope for the wise.'
