Section 6 - The Story of That Poet Who Claimed to Praise the King and Brought a Brief Letter with Only the King's Name

Original content

English translation

A poet went before the renowned king, Saying: 'O you whose head in height touches the heavens! In your praise, I have composed a fresh poem; I have pierced a bright pearl like the Sirius star. Although a multitude of people have composed in your praise, Such praise as this they have rarely spoken to you.' He then handed a letter to the king, In which only the king's name was written in ink. The king said to him: 'O you devoid of intellect and sense! It is better for you to be silent from such praise. The writing of your letter is nothing but a name and that is all; The mention of someone's name is not the praise of anyone. You have neither described me with sovereignty and justice, Nor have you brought any speech of crown and throne. When you take my name apart from these qualities, That is not the manner of offering praise.' He said: 'O King! By this blessed name, You have achieved fame for noble qualities. Whoever reads or hears your name, To where else but these qualities would their mind go? Since your name is indicative of these attributes, It is a whole register of the qualities of perfection. Even though no word other than this is mentioned, It is not far-fetched if I call it your praise.'
