در دیار مصر قحطی خاست سخت
کز فزع هر کس به نیل انداخت رخت

چون به سوی نان رهی نشناختند
رخت هستی را در آب انداختند

بود جانی قیمت هر تای نان
نان همی گفتند و می دادند جان

بخردی زیبا غلامی را بدید
کاو به فخر و ناز دامن می کشید

طلعتی چون قرص خور آراسته
نی ز کم خواری مه آسا کاسته

تازه روی و خنده ناک و شادکام
هر طرف چون شاخ خرم در خرام

بخردش گفت «ای غلام از فخر و ناز
چند باشی سرکش و گردن فراز ؟

از غم نان عالمی خوار و دژم
تو چرایی اینچنین فارغ ز غم ؟ »

گفت «بر سر خواجه ای دارم کریم
هستم از انعام او غرق نعیم

خوان پر از نان ، خانه اش پر گندم است
نام قحط از خان و مان او گم است

چون نباشم خرم و شاد اینچنین ؟!
وز گزند قحط آزاد اینچنین؟ !»

English translation

In the land of Egypt, a severe famine arose, Such that from terror everyone cast their belongings into the Nile. Since they knew no way to find bread, They threw the robe of existence into the water. A life was the price of each loaf of bread; They kept saying 'bread' and giving up their lives. A wise man saw a beautiful slave, Who was strutting with pride and grace, dragging his skirt. His countenance adorned like the sun's disk, Not decreased like the moon due to eating little. Fresh-faced, laughing, and joyful, Walking in every direction like a cheerful branch. The wise man said to him, 'O slave, with pride and grace, How long will you be rebellious and holding your head high? From the grief of bread, a whole world is wretched and sorrowful; Why are you so carefree and devoid of grief?' He said, 'Over my head, I have a generous master; I am drowned in blessings from his bounty. His table is full of bread, his house is full of wheat; The very name of famine is lost from his household. Why should I not be cheerful and happy like this, And thus free from the harm of famine?'
