Section 31 - The Story of What the Prophet Said Concerning That Miserly Woman

Original content

English translation

A widow went before the Prophet, A fruit-gatherer from the sapling of acceptance. Someone praised her to the Prophet, Speaking of her righteous deeds, That she fasts every day, And spends all night in prayer. But her hand is closed to generosity, And the vein of her soul is bound to miserliness. The Seal of the Prophets said, 'Would that her robe and pocket Were stained with every other fault, But her hand had not been closed by miserliness From constantly bestowing wealth. Wherever miserliness is, glory is trodden underfoot; Wherever generosity is, faults become virtues.'
