شنیدم که فرزانه مردی حکیم
به زن داد روزی یکی کیسه سیم

پس از چند روزش بپرسد حال
وز آن کیسه سیم کردش سؤال

بگفتا به دست من آن کیسه سیم
چو آمد چو زر کردم آن را دو نیم

یکی صرف کردم به هر سینه ریش
یکی کردمش صرفه از بهر خویش

حکیم آن حکایت چو از وی شنفت
بگفت ای نه دانا به راز نهفت

بود بهره ات آن که کردی نثار
نه آن کش ز گنجینه کردی حصار

به گنجینه نقدی که مخزون بود
که داند که انجام آن چون بود

نیارد برون کس ازین سر سری
که آن بهره توست یا دیگری

بیا ساقیا باده در جام کن
به رندان لب تشنه انعام کن

به هر کس که یک جرعه خواهی فشاند
نخواهد جز آن از جهان با تو ماند

بیا مطربا پرده ای ساز لیک
به هنجار نیکو و گفتار نیک

به گیتی مزن جز به نیکی نفس
که اینست آیین نیکان و بس

English translation

I heard that a wise and learned man One day gave a woman a purse of silver. After some days he inquired of her state And questioned her about that purse of silver. She said: When that purse of silver Came into my hand, like gold I split it in two. One half I spent on every wounded heart, The other I set aside and saved for myself. When the sage heard that account from her, He said: O you who are not wise to the hidden secret, Your share is that which you gave away in charity, Not that which you walled up in the treasury. The coin stored away in the treasury— Who knows what its end shall be? No one can draw forth this mystery, Whether it is your share or another's. Come, O cupbearer, pour wine into the cup; Bestow bounty on the thirsty-lipped rogues. To everyone to whom you would scatter a single draught, Nothing but that will remain with you from the world. Come, O minstrel, strike up a melody, but In good measure and with fair speech. In this world breathe only with goodness, For this is the way of the good, and that is all.
