رفت پیش آن معبر ، ساده ای
از ره عقل و خرد افتاده ای

گفت «دیدم صبحدم خود را به خواب
در دهی سرگشته ویران و خراب

هر کجا از دور دیدم خانه ای
بود بی دیوار و در ویرانه ای

چون نهادم در یکی ویرانه پای
کرد پای من درون گنج جای »

آن معبر گفت با مسکین به طنز
کای گرانمایه به گنج کنت کنز

آهنین نعلینی اندر پا فکن
سنگ خارا بر شکاف و کوه کن

هر زمان می کش به یک ویرانه رخت
پای خود را بر زمین می کوب سخت

هر کجا پایت خورد غوطه به خاک
کن به ناخن های دست آن را مغاک

چون دهی آن خاک را زینسان شکست
شک ندارم کافتدت گنجی به دست

چون به صدق اعتقاد آن ساده مرد
رفت و بر قول معبر کار کرد

شد فرو در جست و جو نابرده رنج
در نخستین گام پای او به گنج

صدق می باید به هر کاری که هست
تا فتد دامان مقصودت به دست

گر فتد در صدقت اندک تاب و پیچ
جست و جوی تو همه هیچ است هیچ

English translation

A simpleton went to a dream interpreter, one who had strayed from the path of intellect and reason. He said, 'At dawn, I saw myself in a dream, bewildered in a ruined and desolate village. Wherever I looked from afar, every house was a ruin without walls or doors. As I set foot inside one of those ruins, my foot sank into a hidden treasure.' The interpreter mockingly said to the poor man, 'O precious one of the hidden treasure! Put iron shoes upon your feet, split hard rocks, and dig through mountains. Move your belongings from one ruin to another, and stamp your foot hard upon the ground. Wherever your foot sinks into the dust, dig a pit there with your fingernails. When you break the earth in this manner, I have no doubt that a treasure will come into your hands.' Out of the absolute sincerity of his belief, that simple man went and acted upon the interpreter's advice. He plunged into the search without enduring any hardship, and on his very first step, his foot struck a treasure. Sincerity is required in whatever task you undertake, so that the hem of your goal may fall into your hand. If even a slight twist or doubt enters your sincerity, your search will end in absolutely nothing.
