Section 36 - The Tale of the Reason for the Caliph's Not Reaching That Newly-Arrived Slave Girl

Original content

English translation

The caliph, who was the sultan of the horizons, was peerless in command over the world. He had a sweet-lipped one within his harem, all sweet of soul from head to foot. His heart inclined greatly toward her, yet he kept the restrainer of reason at work. A confidant said to him: O fortunate one, take your heart's desire from this sweet-lipped one. He replied: with the crown of the caliphate upon my head, all west and east are under my command; it is not fitting that before this coquette I should come down upon the knee of helplessness and need, that out of childishness I make her my bed-companion and set myself as her equal. Come, cupbearer, bring that dissolved draught that makes the clever one heedless as a fool. Give it, that I may sit apart from every pair, and grant divorce to the even and the odd of the world. Come, minstrel, and tune the ear of the lute; carry this song to the ears of the companions: that for the free-spirited rends, in lawful wedlock nothing is permitted but the daughter of the vine.
