English translation

O you who have not been free of self for even a single moment, Do not seek private seclusion from the common people at every turn. Do not become solitary like the letter Alif, apart from everyone; Hear the decree 'The believer is one who shows and receives affection.' The inclination for connection in the letter Alif is minimal, Except with a letter that precedes it. Whatever is lower than it in rank, The door of connection is closed to its face. If you are not, like Alif, bound to nothing, Do not turn away from those who have preceded you. But from those who drag you down to baseness, And draw you onto the path of self-indulgence, Lift your head to the highest battlements of high resolve, And withdraw the hem of your association from them. Seclusion is pleasant when from strangers, not from friends; Do not let go of the hem of companions' conversation. A friend acquires perfection from a friend; A friend gains dignity and glory from a friend. Friends with one another are like soul and body, Bound as tightly as the spirit and the flesh. The body learns life from the soul, The soul accumulates servitude through the body. What is a body without a soul but a corpse? And what is a soul without a body but an idle thing? The stone gains warmth from the ray of light, And water becomes rosewater through companionship with the rose. When the morning breeze passes over the rose and sweet basil, It passes scattering precious perfume over your head. But if it makes its way toward weeds and thorns, It will wound your eye with the sting of a thorn. When you gird your loins for companionship, And intend to sit with partners, Connect with the great with proper decorum, And accept whatever good and bad you see. Bear whatever is bad from them with goodness, Though indeed, only goodness comes from their deeds. Their speech is of the stations of spiritual attainment, And from you, there should be faith and receptive acceptance. Be chivalrous with your companions, And sow the seeds of selflessness and generosity. When their flaws are exposed and fall outside the veil, Keep your gaze hidden from those flaws. Show compassion toward subordinates, If you find a domain, rule with greatness. When they make a mistake, approach them with advice; Open the path for them with counsel. If you desire the companionship of the good, The path to it opens only through goodness. Become good so that you may reach the good, And become one of the good through your own goodness. O how many a bad person, through a single good trait, Has sat knee-to-knee with the righteous.
