English translation

O you who in the ranks of the age claim proximity, There is a long way from you to the realm of proximity. The day of proximity has come, and distance is a dark night; Since there is no day, seek rest in the night. Far from this day is the dark night; How long, like the dawn, will you claim closeness? When the fortune of closeness presents itself, You must sit at a distance with proper decorum. If you are proud of your closeness, Grieve for yourself, for you are in extreme distance. The pure-hearted who claimed proximity, Stamped their names on the coin of proximity. They withdrew their feet from this deep monastery, And packed their belongings from this earthen dungeon. They set foot upon the water, And raised their banner higher than the wind. They passed warmly through fire like smoke, Dancing upon the dome of the blue heaven. One by one they traversed the leaves of the sphere, Turning their faces toward the Pedestal and the Throne. They made a step from the top of the Pedestal, And the Throne cast its shadow over their heads. But they did not bow their heads to that shadow, Nor did they find sleep sweet in that shadow. They sought aid from the eternal kingdom, And washed the darkness of shadow from themselves. A hundred doors of grace opened to them, Increasing their proximity upon proximity. Their eyes were adorned with the kohl of prosperity, And the vision of proximity did not become a veil to their sight. Submerged in union and unaware of union, Aware of nothing but that source-Qiblah. The veil of their proximity became their dwelling, Free from the veil of fear and hope. But those who are aware of proximity, Their souls waste away from the awareness of it. Though they receive endearments from proximity, Every moment they melt from fear— Lest it should lead to decline, And grief and sorrow should settle in the heart. Their state is thus altered, Their eyes full of tears, their hearts full of blood. The face of their fortune turns pale, The breath of their pleasure turns cold. It throws a flame into the thread of their soul, And they melt like a candle from its heat.
