Section 53 - Uyaynah Explaining His State of Affairs to Mu'tamar

English translation

One day among days, to earn spiritual reward, I turned my face toward the Mosque of Al-Ahzab. I turned my face to the Qibla of faithfulness, And paid the mosque's due, as was appropriate. With all my soul, I entered the state of consecration (ihram) for prayer, And stood upright in the station of truthfulness. I bent my back in bowing (ruku'), And moistened the place of prostration with tears from both eyes. I sat freely for the testimony of faith (tashahhud), Falling from the testimony into sweetness. My finger was moved in the sweetness (of the testimony), Leaving bitterness behind. For the untying of the knots of the days, I became eager for the final salutations of peace (salam). I raised my hands to heaven in supplication, And pressed my foot on the path of divine acceptance. Seeking pardon, I turned to asking forgiveness, For all deeds and the finality of affairs. I moved from the middle to the side, And sat down with a desire to observe. From afar, I saw a group of women, Stepping toward that place of display. Not women, but rather a herd of gazelles, Each with a murmur of charm and grace. Drowned in pearls were their ears and necks, The dust of the road made musk-scented by their hems. For their dancing in the dwellings and fields, The sound of anklets and bells chiming. One person among them was distinguished, From head to toe, all coyness and grace. She was like the moon and others like stars, She was a peri (fairy) and the others were human. The delight of the soul was her sugar-scattering laugh, The trap of the heart was her captivating tresses. A nectar-filled bud of a rosebush from Iram, A musk-gland in the navel of a sacred sanctuary's gazelle. She stepped aside from that group, Stood over me and opened her lips: 'O Uyaynah! Does your heart desire Union with the one who is wasting away from your grief? Do you have any inclination for being captivated, When a heavy burden from your sorrow is upon her heart?' She spoke these words to me and left quickly, Setting me on fire, and vanishing like smoke. I have no trace of her name, Nor any knowledge of her abode. For a single moment, I have no rest anywhere, And my heart has no inclination for any work. I know nothing of my own head or feet, I wander from lane to lane and place to place. He said this and let out a cry, And losing consciousness, fell upon the dust. After a long while, he came back to himself, And with a face wet with blood, he began to sing.
