Section 54 - Uyaynah Singing a Ghazal About His Own Condition

Original content

English translation

With a heart-rending voice, he began to cry out, And commenced a breast-burning ghazal: 'O you who have departed a hundred stages far from me, Yet have made your home like my soul within my heart, Though you tread the path of separation, You do not pass by those with bleeding hearts. My clay and water remain far from your door, But the eye of my soul and heart is fixed upon your face. Your love has made its dwelling in my heart, And my heart has taken up residence at your door. Behold my desire, do not reject me, For out of both worlds, I desire only you. Without you, life is a torment to me, Even if it were the eternal paradise.' When the elder of the Arabs saw that state, He drew the sword of speech in blame: 'O boy, return from this mistaken path! You have lost your place, return to your proper place! Repent of your sinfulness, And feel shame for your lack of shame! The dread of the Day of Reckoning lies ahead; Woe to him who does not consider the end! Remember the stations of the Resurrection fields, And standing ashamed among the sinners. Love that is not directed toward Eternal Beauty, Consider it a mere desire full of deceit and trickery. Lust is not blessed for a man; Show manhood and turn away from this lust!' He replied: 'O you who are ignorant of the mourning of love, Heedless of the soul-melting sorrow of love! Wherever love has taken deep root, It grows branches of grief and fruit of sorrow. It cannot be uprooted by blame, Nor felled by advice. Musk may lose its scent, and ruby its color; The heavens may cease their motion, and the earth its stillness; But never, God forbid, shall my heart-cleaving beloved Pack up and depart from the sanctuary of my heart. The word of her love within my narrow heart Is like an inscription carved in stone. Through love, my glass has struck the stone; Do not pelt my head with stones of blame!'
