English translation

On the day of Ashura, all the people of Aleppo At the Antioch gate until nightfall Gather, men and women, a great multitude Keeping the mourning of that (Holy) Family constantly They lament and wail in weeping The Shia on Ashura for Karbala They recount those oppressions and trials That the Family saw from Yazid and Shimr Their cries go up in wailing and woe Filling the entire desert and plain A stranger, a poet, arrived from the road On the day of Ashura and heard that lamentation He left the city and headed that way Intending to investigate that commotion He went asking questions in inquiry "What is this sorrow, upon whom has this mourning fallen? It must be a great chief who has died Such a gathering is no small matter Give me an account of his name and his titles For I am a stranger and you are the people of the town What is his name and profession and his qualities So that I may recite an elegy of his graces I will compose an elegy, for I am a poet So that I may take provisions and morsels from here." Someone said to him, "Hey, are you crazy? You are not a Shia, you are an enemy of the House! Do you not know that it is the day of Ashura? The mourning for a soul who is better than a whole generation! How can this grief be taken lightly before a believer? The value of love is an earring for the ear of love Before a believer, the mourning of that pure spirit Is more famous than a hundred floods of Noah."
