Book Six - Section 61 - The Qadi Answering the Sufi

Original content

English translation

The Qadi said, 'If there were no bitter command, and if there were no good and bad, and stone and pearl, And if there were no ego, Satan, and vain desire, and if there were no wound, struggle, and battle, Then by what name and title would the King call His servants, O shameless one? How could He say, 'O patient one' and 'O forbearing one'? How could He say, 'O brave one' and 'O wise one'? How would there be 'patient ones,' 'truthful ones,' and 'charitable ones' without the highwayman and the accursed devil? Rustam, Hamza, and a coward would be all the same; knowledge and wisdom would be void and obliterated. Knowledge and wisdom exist for distinguishing the right path from the wrong path; when everything is the right path, that wisdom is useless. For the sake of this shop of bitter water [this base world], do you deem it right that both worlds be ruined? I know well that you are pure and not raw, and this question of yours is for the sake of the common people. The cruelty of the times and whatever pain exists, is easier to bear than distance from God and heedlessness. Because these [worldly pains] will pass, but that [distance from God] will not pass; fortune belongs to the one who departs with an awakened soul.'
