Original content

English translation

When the emirs began to boil with envy, They finally taunted their King, Saying, 'This Ayaz of yours does not have the intellect of thirty men, How does he consume the stipend of thirty emirs?' The King went out with those thirty emirs, Towards the desert and mountains to hunt. From afar, that King saw a caravan, He said to an emir, 'Go, O liar, Go and ask that caravan at the watch-post, From which city are they arriving?' He went, asked, and came back saying, 'From Rayy.' The King said, 'Where is its destination?' He was at a loss. He told another, 'Go, O Abu l-Ala, Ask the caravan again, where are they heading?' He went and came back, saying, 'Towards Yemen.' The King said, 'What are their goods? Come now, O trusted one!' He remained bewildered; the King said to another emir, 'Go and ask about the goods of those people.' He came back and said, 'There is of every kind, But mostly it is bowls from Rayy.' The King said, 'When did they depart from the city of Rayy?' That weak-footed emir remained bewildered. In this way, up to thirty emirs and more, Were weak in judgment and deficient in their pomp and show. He said to the emirs, 'One day, apart, I tested my own Ayaz, Telling him to ask the caravan where it is from. He went and asked all this exactly right. Without instruction, without a hint, one by one, He discovered their condition without doubt or suspicion. Whatever was revealed by these thirty emirs in thirty stages, Was fully accomplished by him in a single moment.'
