English translation

The minstrel began before the intoxicated Turk, In the veil of melody, the secrets of Alast. 'I do not know if you are a moon or an idol, I do not know what you want from me. I do not know what service to bring you, Should I be silent or bring you into expression? This is a wonder, that you are not separate from me, Yet I do not know where I am and where you are. I do not know how you are dragging me, Sometimes pulling me into an embrace, sometimes into blood.' Thus he opened his lips with 'I do not know', He played the tune of 'I do not know, I do not know.' When his 'I do not know' exceeded bounds from amazement, Our Turk's heart became weary of this repeated song. That Turk leaped up and drew a mace, So that he came with it upon the head of the minstrel. A captain grabbed the mace in his hand, Saying, 'No! Killing a minstrel right now is bad.' The Turk said, 'This boundless and limitless repetition of his Has pounded my temper; I will pound his head. O pimp! If you do not know, do not eat filth (do not speak nonsense)! And if you do know, sing what you intend! Tell that, O dizzy one, which you do know, Do not drag out 'I do not know, I do not know'. I might ask, 'Where are you from, O insolent one?' And you might say, 'Neither from Balkh nor from Herat, Neither from Baghdad, nor Mosul, nor Taraz;' You draw out a long path of 'no' and 'no'. Tell me yourself where I am from and be free! The clarification of the basis of the argument is here, yes. Or if I asked, 'What did you eat for breakfast?' And you say, 'Neither wine nor kebab, Neither dried meat, nor soup, nor lentils;' Say only that which you did eat, and that is enough! What is the reason for this long-winded chewing of words?' The minstrel said, 'Because my meaning is hidden. The affirmation flees before your negation, I negated so that you might catch a scent of the affirmation. I bring this instrument into tune through negation, When you die, death will tell the secret.'
