Original content

English translation

When the Friend of God, that noble leader, Received the tables of bounty from the Truth, He placed the crown of fortune upon his head, And cast the robe of friendship upon his body. He became a guide for the path-walkers of heart, And scriptures descended upon his pure heart. The abundance of his wealth went beyond number, His flocks and herds surpassed all limits. Mountain and valley were full of his livestock and blessings, City and village were full of the margins of his servants. Yet, with all this, he would not rest, He was ever seeking the pleasure of the Truth. By day he was busy with the occupation of hospitality, By night in the contemplation of calling upon God. Steadfast in the station of spiritual struggle, He constantly walked in worship. When the holy angels saw his state, They measured it only with the scale of assumption. They drank from the chalice of conjecture, And thus they suspected his state: That all his continuous effort and struggle Is nothing but in return for His blessings. The love of the blessings has led him astray, He has not found the way to the love of the Benefactor. That love is based on actions and names, It is not the madness of loving the Essence. Love that does not emanate from the Essence Is the target for the arrows of afflictions. For when the actions of the beloved and their attributes, Turn into their opposites, The lovers' hearts become frozen, And the warmth of their love vanishes. But if love is emanated from the Essence, That love will have permanence and stability. In whatever attribute the Essence appears, The lover is maddened by its love. Whether that attribute is approval or wrath, The lover's soul receives its share from both.
