English translation
When the Truth knew that fancy and suspicion, He knew the remedy for it lay in trial. For testing His Friend He desired a touchstone; He gave the command that a host of angels Clothed themselves in human form, And chanting praises, passed by him. The sound of glorification and the cry of declaration of unity They raised in the vicinity of the Friend. From that soul-refreshing melody and sound, The intellect and consciousness of the Friend departed from their place. He heard the name of the Beloved and offered his soul; He shook his sleeve at all the world. Oh, how sweet are those grief-mingled melodies Which are joy-giving and passion-arousing! They tear up the intellect from root and branch, And renew the ancient love in the heart. When that praise-chanting group became Silent from those mind-stealing praises, The Friend came to himself and called out: 'Begin this melody once more! My soul is not yet satiated with spiritual audition; Why did you grow bold in silence? The state of the Sufis is not yet complete; Silence is forbidden to the singer. There is nothing in the religion of Islam But the completion of the slaughter of the sacrifice. If a bird that eats grain from your hand, You leave half-slain, it is not pleasing. Either do not intend the life of any living being, Or if you slay it, slay it completely at once. The half-slain is neither dead nor alive; The soul of the lover is not worth that. The state of the people of error in the hereafter Has become neither dying nor living.' The holy ones pierced the pearl of politeness, And in response to the Friend of God, they said: 'How long shall we recite this remembrance for free? We have worked, and we seek our wage. No one does work without a wage, And the eye that has seen a wage does not tire of work. If you want work, open your hand to give a wage; The knot of work is loosened by wages.' He said: 'Of whatever wealth and real estate I possess, I bestow two-sixths upon you as a tribute. Once more for God's sake, Perform this joy-increasing melody.' With eloquent utterance and fluent words, The holy ones resumed the glorification. The cry of 'Holy' and the shout of 'Praise' Stirred the soul of Abraham. His heart and soul fell into vibration; His past ecstasy and state returned. An ecstasy and state such that it is impossible To comprehend it before intellect, fancy, and imagination. Nay, for one not freed from imagination and suspicion, Its comprehension is not possible for you. The holy ones closed their lips again, And from that sound sat in silence. That praised-natured one raised his voice: 'I sacrifice another two-sixths! Repeat this remembrance again, Increase my agitation and ecstasy. My soul is a fish, and the remembrance of God is water; The patience of a fish without water is not right. The fish cannot endure being away from water, And if it does endure, how can it remain alive? Whatever is on the shore away from water, Is not a fish, but a lizard. The lizard is under the flowing sand, Though people mistake it for a fish.' The praise-reciters, having become wage-seekers, Saw the wage and became praise-reciters. A clamor and shout they cast into the kingdom of heaven: 'The remembrance of the Lord of Majesty and Might!' The Friend became beside himself from hearing it, He folded up the veil of existence from before him. He rent his garment of existence, He stuck his head out from the collar of the existence of God. When once again the angelic host Placed the seal of silence on their lips, The cry of yearning was raised by the Friend: 'Whatever I possess of much or little, I sacrifice all of it to you, So that your melody may not be severed. Do not sit silent from this song, For in its audition, I have become all ears.' They began that melody again, They performed the litany of their glorification. The Friend became intoxicated by their melody, He completely lost his reins. He found a sweet moment from that sweet song, He waved his hand of high resolve like a Sufi. Whatever of his property and wealth was pleasing, He cast all of it at the feet of the musicians. In a spiritual audition in which, out of sheer delight, The fire of the flame of yearning does not spread, Waving one's sleeve in farewell to oneself and the creation Is but turning around oneself, and that is not sama'. From the fire of trial, like Abraham, He emerged pure like pure gold and sound. The holy ones became visible before him, saying: 'We are messengers from the God of the world. We are not humans, we are angels; We are the touchstone for your hidden coin. We have come for your trial; We are the examiners of your hidden treasury. Praise be to God that you were numbered Like gold that is ten out of ten, fully assayed. You are the Friend, and in you the love of God Has permeated from head to foot. Every part of you from foot to crown Has become drowned in friendship and love. You are a servant of the Benefactor, not a servant of benefits; What grief is there for you from the loss of benefits? If benefits, for example, should turn into afflictions, Your love is not such that it would decrease. Since your heart does not rest without God, Only you are worthy of the crown of friendship. Every suspicion we had of you, It became clear that it was a mistake and error. Your love is essential, not accidental, Purified from the mixture of any purpose. When love is directed toward the beauty of the Essence, Far be it from God that it should be unstable.'
