Section 45 - Salaman Awakening from His Nightly Sleep and Summoning Absal to the Feast of Pleasure

Original content

English translation

At dawn, when this dark-veiled beauty Drew columns of pure gold from this azure dome for the sleepy ones, And applied the kohl of wakefulness to the eyes, The prince arose from his bed, successful and prosperous, His eyes half-asleep from the night's wakefulness, A lingering trace of the night's hangover within him, A stirring of desire for his night companion within him. To dispel that hangover, his heart Desired a draft, but from the ruby lips of the beloved. He summoned the beloved, free from the intrusion of rivals, And seated her by his side on the high cushion. He parted the veil of modesty from her beauty, And resumed last night's pleasure with her. The next day followed the exact same pattern, And the evil eye of fate remained far from them. Days became weeks, weeks became months, and months became years, Months and years free from grief and sorrow. His sole concern was that their joy and pleasure Should not be separated from each other, neither by day nor by night. Yet the turning of the celestial wheel said from its ambush: 'It is not my way to let things remain thus. How many companionships have I raised during the day, Only to sever their thread when night arrived! And how much fortune have I bestowed at evening, Whose turn was completely finished by dawn!'
