Section 42 - Supplication in Seeking the Station of Poverty (Faqr) After Attaining the Station of Asceticism (Zuhd)

Original content

English translation

O You, whose door of mercy is open to all, The high and the low are drowned in Your bounty. Lovers are bound in yearning for You, Ascetics are content with Your mental image. If there were no trace of Yours associated with the idol, No one would ever take a step toward the idol-temple. If a scent of Yours did not reach the sense of smell, No one would smell the sweet-scented rose in the garden. The scar of Your love is sufficient for the garden of Jami's heart, Yet he yearns for a scent from Your garden. Grant him a scent from Your garden as his daily portion, Grant him the pleasure of Your scar as his daily portion. Do not bind him with the traps of desires, Sever his attachment to every vain whim. Inscribe the design of Your sorrow upon his heart, Do not let his mind be bound to any other worldly form. Stitch the patch of poverty (faqr) onto his tattered garment, Make his heart weary of worldly pursuits through the taste of annihilation (fana). So that when he raises his head from the tattered cloak of poverty, He may be dead to himself, and alive through poverty.
