Book Six - Section 43 - The Tale of That Sick Person in Whom the Physician Saw No Hope of Recovery

Original content

English translation

A certain sick person went to the physician. He said, 'Examine my pulse, O wise one, So that from the pulse you may become aware of the state of the heart, Because the vein of the hand is connected to the heart. Since the heart is hidden, if you want a sign of it, Seek it from that which is connected to the heart. The wind is hidden from the eye, O trustworthy one; See it in the dust and the movement of the leaves. Whether it blows from the right or from the left, The movement of your leaves tells you its state. You do not know where the intoxication of the heart is; Seek its description from the languid, intoxicated eye. Since you are far from the Essence of Truth, the description of His Essence You recognize through the Messenger and miracles. Hidden miracles and spiritual graces Flash upon the heart from the pure spiritual guides. For within them, a hundred resurrections are present; The least of which is that their neighbor becomes intoxicated. Therefore, that fortunate one became the companion of God, Who moved his baggage to the side of a blessed one. The miracle that struck an effect on inanimate matter— Like the staff on the sea or the splitting of the moon— If it strikes your soul directly, It connects through a hidden bond. Those effects upon inanimate things are merely borrowed; They are for the sake of the pleasant, hidden spirit, So that the mind may take an effect from that solid matter. How excellent is the bread without the substance of dough! How excellent is the table of Jesus, without any shortage! How excellent is Mary's fruit, without an orchard! Miracles flash out from the perfect soul Upon the mind of the seeker's soul like life itself. The miracle is the sea, and the deficient one is a bird of the earth; The water-bird is safe in it from destruction. It brings helplessness to the soul of every stranger, But it grants power to the soul of the intimate companion. Since you do not find this felicity within your heart, Then derive evidence from the outward at every moment. For effects are visible on the senses, And these effects give news of the Effector. The hidden essence of every medicine, Just like the magic and craft of every sorcerer— When you look at its action and effects, Though it is hidden, you make it manifest. A power that is concealed within it, When it comes into action, it is evident and manifest. Since through effects all these became evident to you, Why did your God not become evident through His effect? Are not causes and effects the kernel and the skin? When you search, all are His effects. You embrace things based on their effects; Then why are you ignorant of the Bestower of effects? From an illusion you take creation as a friend; Why do you not take the King of the West and East? This discourse has no end, O Qobad; May our eagerness in this have no end!'
