Book Six - Section 70 - The Tale of the Disciple of Sheikh Hasan Kharaqani, May God Sanctify His Secret

Original content

English translation

A dervish traveled from the city of Talaqan For the sake of the fame of Abu'l-Hasan Kharaqani. He crossed mountains and long valleys, To see the Sheikh with sincerity and need. What he experienced on the road of suffering and hardship, Although worthy to be told, I will cut short. When that young man reached his destination from the road, He sought the address of the house of that king. When, with a hundred respects, he knocked on his door-ring, The wife put her head out of the door of the house, Saying, 'What do you want? Speak, O generous one!' He said, 'I have come with the intention of visitation.' The woman let out a laugh, saying, 'Ha, ha! Look at the beard! Look at this undertaking of a journey and this trouble! Did you have no business in that place of yours, That you would vainly resolve upon this journey? Did an appetite for foolish wandering come upon you, Or did weariness of your homeland overcome you? Or perhaps a demon placed a two-pronged pitchfork upon your neck, And opened the door of the temptation to travel to you?' She spoke such unseemly words, abuse, and deception, That I cannot repeat them all. From the analogies and countless mockings, That disciple fell into a descent of sorrow.
