Section 40 - A Parable Explaining the Nature of Form and Meaning

Original content

English translation

I heard that in the month of Nisan, The oyster comes up from the bottom of Oman. From the depth of the sea's floor it rises to the surface, It sits upon the face of the sea with its mouth open. A mist rises from the sea, It rains down by the command of God the Almighty. A few drops drip into its mouth, Its mouth becomes closed with a hundred bonds. It goes back to the bottom of the sea with a full heart, That raindrop becomes a royal pearl. The sea diver goes down to the bottom, From there he brings out the brilliant pearl. Your body is the shore and being is like the sea; Its mist is Grace and the rain is the knowledge of the names. Intellect is the diver of that great ocean, Who has a hundred jewels in his garment. The heart became like a vessel for knowledge, The oyster with the heart's knowledge is voice and letter. Breath flows like a flashing lightning, From it, words reach the ear of the listener. Break the oyster and bring out the kingly pearl; Throw away the skin, take the exquisite kernel. Language with its etymology, and grammar with its syntax, All revolve around the word. Whoever spent his whole life on this, Spent his precious life in vain. From the walnut, the green husk fell into his hand; He who does not break the shell will not find the kernel. Indeed, without the shell, every kernel is unripe; From outward knowledge comes the exquisite knowledge of religion. Listen to my advice, O brother of the soul, Strive with soul and heart in the knowledge of religion. For the scholar found mastery in both worlds, Even if he was lesser, through it he found greatness. Action that comes from the state of inner experience, Is much better than the knowledge of mere speech. But the work that comes from water and clay, Is not like knowledge, for that work comes from the heart. Look at the difference between body and soul, That you take this as the West and that as the East. From here, distinguish between states and actions, In relation to the knowledge of speech and the knowledge of state. It is not knowledge that has a desire for the world, Which has form but lacks meaning. Knowledge never gathers with greed; If you want an angel, drive the dog away from yourself. Religious sciences are from the character of the angel; They are not in a heart that has the nature of a dog. The Hadith of Mustafa is ultimately this; Listen well, for it is certainly so. When there is an image inside a house, An angel will not enter it of necessity. Go and polish the surface of the tablet of the heart, So that the angel may make his dwelling before you. From him, acquire the knowledge of inheritance, Practice cultivation for the sake of the hereafter. Read the Book of Truth from the self and the horizons, Be adorned with the origin of all virtues.
