Section 4 - Answer

English translation

You said to me, "Tell me, what is contemplation? For I have remained bewildered by this meaning." Contemplation is going from falsehood toward the Truth, Seeing the Absolute Whole within the part. Sages who have authored works on this, Spoke thus when giving its definition: That when a concept is formed in the heart, Its first name is recollection. And when you pass beyond it in the state of thinking, Its name in customary usage is consideration. The conceptualization which is meant for deliberation, Is known to the people of intellect as contemplation. From the arrangement of known concepts, An uncomprehended assertion becomes comprehended. The premise is like a father, the consequent like a mother, The conclusion is the child, O brother. But the aforementioned arrangement of "what and how," Is in need of the application of logical rules. Furthermore, if there is no divine confirmation in it, Inevitably, it is mere imitation. That road is long and distant, abandon it! Like Moses, cast away your staff for a moment! Enter the valley of safety for a time, Hear "Verily, I am Allah" without a doubt. To the realized seeker whose vision is immersed in unity, The very first glance falls upon the Light of Being. A heart that saw light and purity through gnosis, In whatever it saw, it first saw God. The prerequisite for proper thought is detachment, Followed by a flash from the lightning of divine confirmation. Whoever has not been guided by God, Has unlocked nothing through the use of logic. Since the philosophical sage is in a state of bewilderment, He sees nothing in objects other than contingency. From contingency, he seeks to prove the Necessary Being, And thus he became bewildered regarding the Essence of the Necessary. Sometimes he travels backward in a circular proof, Sometimes he becomes imprisoned in an infinite regress. When his intellect delved deeply into existence, His foot became tangled in an infinite regress. The manifestation of all things is through their opposites, But the Truth has neither a counterpart nor a peer. Since the Essence of Truth has no opposite or equal, I do not know how you expect to know Him! The contingent being bears no resemblance to the Necessary, How, then, can you know Him? How? What an ignorant fool is he who seeks the radiant sun, Using the light of a candle in the desert!
