Section 1 - Prologue

Original content

English translation

In the name of Him who taught the soul to think, Who kindled the heart's lamp with the light of the soul. By His grace, both worlds became bright, By His bounty, the dust of Adam became a rose garden. The Powerful One who, in the twinkling of an eye, Brought the two worlds into existence from Kâf and Nûn (Kun - 'Be'). When the Qâf of His power breathed upon the pen, It struck thousands of images on the tablet of non-existence. From that breath both worlds became manifest, And from that breath the soul of Adam became evident. In Adam appeared this intellect and discernment, So that through it he knew the origin of all things. When he saw himself as a specific individual, He pondered: 'What am I myself?' He made a journey from the part toward the whole, And from there he passed again over the world. He saw the world as a conceptual matter, Like the One that has permeated through numbers. The world of creation and command came from a single breath, Which at the very moment it came, went back again. But in that place there is no coming and going, Going, when you look, is nothing but coming. Things returned to their original source, Hidden and apparent all became one thing. Exalted is the Eternal God who in a single breath, Makes the beginning and the end of the two worlds. The world of creation and command here became one, The one became many and the many became few. This form of the 'other' is all from your illusion, For the dot is a circle from the speed of its movement. There is one line from the beginning to the end, Upon which the creatures of the world have become travelers. On this path the prophets are like caravan leaders, They are the guides and directors of the caravan. And from among them our Master has become the chief, He is both the first and the last in this matter. Ahad (The One) became manifest in the mim of Ahmad, In this cycle the first came to be the very last. From Ahmad to Ahad there is a difference of one mim, A world is drowned in that one mim. Upon him this path has reached its conclusion, In him the 'Invite to Allah' has become a dwelling place. His heart-expanding station is the gathering of gatherings, His soul-increasing beauty is the candle of the gathering. He has gone ahead and the hearts are all following, The hands of the hearts have grasped his hem. On this path the saints again, from behind and ahead, Have given a sign of their own dwelling place. When they became aware of their own limit, They spoke about the Known and the Knower. One spoke of 'I am the Truth' from the ocean of unity, One of nearness and distance and the sailing of the boat. One had acquired the exoteric knowledge, And gave a sign of the dryness of the shore. One brought forth a pearl and became the target, One left that and went near the shell. One spoke this word again about the part and the whole, One began from the eternal and the created. One explained about the tress and mole and down, Made evident the wine and candle and witness (beloved). One spoke of his own existence and illusion, One became immersed in the idol and the zunnar (zoroastrian belt). Since the words fell according to their station, They fell as a difficulty in the understandings of the creatures. For someone who is bewildered in this meaning, It becomes a necessity to know it.
