بخش ۱۲ - تمثیل در بیان وحدت کارخانه عالم / Section 12 - A Parable Explaining the Unity of the Workshop of the Universe

تو گویی هست این افلاک دوار
به گردش روز و شب چون چرخ فخار

وز او هر لحظه ای دانای داور
ز آب و گل کند یک ظرف دیگر

هر آنچه در مکان و در زمان است
ز یک استاد و از یک کارخانه ست

کواکب گر همه اهل کمالند
چرا هر لحظه در نقص و وبالند ؟

همه در جای و سیر و لون و اشکال
چرا گشتند آخر مختلف حال؟

چرا گه در حضیض و گه در اوجند ؟
گهی تنها فتاده گاه زوجند؟

دل چرخ از چه شد آخر پر آتش ؟
ز شوق کیست او اندر کشاکش ؟

همه انجم بر او گردان پیاده
گهی بالا و گه شیب اوفتاده

عناصر باد و آب و آتش و خاک
گرفته جای خود در زیر افلاک

ملازم هر یکی در منزل خویش
بننهد پای یک ذره پس و پیش

چهار اضداد در طبع مراکز
به هم جمع آمده، کس دیده هرگز؟

مخالف هر یکی در ذات و صورت
شده یک چیز از حکم ضرورت

موالید سه گانه گشته ز ایشان
جماد آنگه نبات آنگاه حیوان

هیولی را نهاده در میانه
ز صورت گشته صافی صوفیانه

همه از حکم و امر و داد داور
به جان استاده و گشته مسخر

جماد از قهر بر خاک اوفتاده
نبات از مهر بر پای ایستاده

نزوع جانور از صدق و اخلاص
پی ابقای جنس و نوع و اشخاص

همه بر حکم داور داده اقرار
مر او را روز و شب گشته طلبکار

English translation

You would say these revolving heavens are In their motion day and night like a potter's wheel. And from it every moment, the Wise Judge Makes another vessel from water and clay. Whatever exists in space and time Is from one Master and from one workshop. If the stars are all possessors of perfection, Why are they at every moment in decline and misfortune? In position, motion, color, and form, Why did they eventually become different in state? Why are they sometimes at their lowest point and sometimes at their zenith? Sometimes solitary, sometimes in pairs? Why did the heart of heaven finally become filled with fire? In longing for whom is it in such conflict? All the stars are revolving on it like foot-soldiers, Sometimes high and sometimes cast low. The elements—wind, water, fire, and earth— Have taken their places beneath the heavens. Each one is constant in its own abode, Not stepping a single atom forward or backward. Four contraries in the nature of centers, Gathered together—has anyone ever seen the like? Each opposing the other in essence and form, Yet becoming one thing by force of necessity. The three kingdoms of nature were born from them: Mineral, then plant, then animal. Placing prime matter in the midst, Purified from form in a Sufi way. All, by the decree, command, and justice of the Judge, Stand ready with soul and have been subjugated. The mineral is cast down upon the earth by constraint, The plant stands upright by love. The yearning of the animal is in sincerity and devotion, For the preservation of genus, species, and individuals. All have confessed to the decree of the Judge, Seeking Him day and night.
