بخش ۱۸ - قاعده در بیان سیر نزول و مراتب صعود آدمی / Section 18 - The Rule Explaining the Descending Journey and the Ascending Degrees of Man

بدان اول که تا چون گشت موجود
کز او انسان کامل گشت مولود

در اطوار جمادی بود پیدا
پس از روح اضافی گشت دانا

پس آنگه جنبشی کرد او ز قدرت
پس از وی شد ز حق صاحب ارادت

به طفلی کرد باز احساس عالم
در او بالفعل شد وسواس عالم

چو جزویات شد بر وی مرتب
به کلیات ره برد از مرکب

غضب شد اندر او پیدا و شهوت
وز ایشان خاست بخل و حرص و نخوت

به فعل آمد صفتهای ذمیمه
بتر شد از دد و دیو و بهیمه

تنزل را بود این نقطه اسفل
که شد با نقطهٔ وحدت مقابل

شد از افعال، کثرت بی نهایت
مقابل گشت از این رو با بدایت

اگر گردد مقید اندر این دام
به گمراهی بود کمتر ز انعام

و گر نوری رسد از عالم جان
ز فیض جذبه یا از عکس برهان

دلش با نور حق همراز گردد
از آن راهی که آمد باز گردد

ز جذبه یا ز برهان یقینی
رهی یابد به ایمان یقینی

کند یک رجعت از سجین فجار
رخ آرد سوی علیین ابرار

به توبه متصف گردد در آن دم
شود در اصطفا ز اولاد آدم

ز افعال نکوهیده شود پاک
چو ادریس نبی آید بر افلاک

چو یابد از صفات بد نجاتی
شود چون نوح از آن صاحب ثباتی

نماند قدرت جزویش در کل
خلیل آسا شود صاحب توکل

ارادت با رضای حق شود ضم
رود چون موسی اندر باب اعظم

ز علم خویشتن یابد رهائی
چو عیسی نبی گردد سمائی

دهد یکباره هستی را به تاراج
درآید از پی احمد به معراج

رسد چون نقطهٔ آخر به اول
در آنجا نه ملک گنجد نه مرسل

English translation

Know first how the universe came to exist, From which the Perfect Man was born. He was manifest in the states of mineral, Then through the supplementary spirit he became knowing. Then he made a movement by power, And after that, from the Truth, he became possessed of free will. In infancy, he sensed the world once more, And the distractions of the world became actualized in him. When particulars became ordered for him, From the compound he found his way to universals. Anger and lust appeared in him, And from them arose avarice, greed, and pride. Blameworthy qualities came into action; He became worse than wild beasts, demons, and brutes. This is the lowest point of descent, Which stands opposite the point of unity. From actions, multiplicity became infinite, And thus stood opposite the beginning. If he remains bound in this trap, In misguidance he is lower than cattle. And if a light arrives from the world of soul, From the grace of attraction or the reflection of proof, His heart becomes intimate with the light of Truth, And he returns by the path he came. By attraction or certain proof, He finds a way to certain faith. He makes a return from the prison of the wicked, And turns his face toward the high ranks of the righteous. In that moment, he becomes characterized by repentance, And is chosen from among the children of Adam. He is cleansed of blameworthy actions, Like the Prophet Enoch, he ascends to the heavens. When he gains salvation from bad traits, Like Noah he becomes a possessor of steadfastness. His partial power does not remain in the whole; Like Abraham, he becomes possessed of trust in God. His will is joined with the pleasure of the Truth; Like Moses, he enters the greatest gate. He gains release from his own knowledge; Like the Prophet Jesus, he becomes heavenly. He plunders his existence all at once, And follows Muhammad in the ascension. When the final point reaches the first point, In that place fits neither angel nor messenger.
